JOANIE'S GRANDMOTHER PASSES AWAY

Dorothy R. Wahl, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, age 94, of New Paltz, died at home at Woodland Pond on Sunday, November 9, 2014. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 63 years, Stuart Wahl, her sister Alice Schreiber, and her brother Jack Vogel.

Dorothy was born in Pittsburgh, PA on October 23, 1920. She graduated from Thiel College with a BA degree in languages. Dorothy married Stuart Wahl January 11, 1942 in Pittsburgh, then moved to Corpus Christi, TX where Stuart served in the Navy during World War II. They moved to Rochester, NY in 1947 where they spent the rest of their married life together. Dorothy moved to Poughkeepsie in 2005 after the loss of her beloved husband, and to Woodland Pond in New Paltz in 2009.

Dorothy was devoted to her family and her church. She was an accomplished pianist, church organist, and active volunteer for the Red Cross, Literacy Volunteers, and the Victor Library. Dorothy loved most to spend time with her family. In addition to her love of music, Dorothy loved to read, garden, and sew. She will be remembered by her Woodland Pond Community and Rochester friends as a sweet, energetic, loving lady.

Dorothy is survived by her daughters and their spouses, Janet and Paul LaQue of FL, and Marcia and Stephen Gates of New Paltz, NY; grandchildren and spouses, Kathy and Scott Hamilton of Sandown, NH, Sonny and Tracey Ostrander of Cary, NC, Joan Laurer of Japan, Todd and Sarah Gates, currently serving the US Marine Corps in Japan, Ryan Gates of Allentown, PA, Justin Gates, currently serving the US Marine Corps in Kuwait; great-grandchildren Chris Ostrander, Nicole Ostrander, Holley Ostrander, Matt Ostrander, Samantha Joan Hamilton, Jack Stuart Gates, Ella Gates, Evelyn Gates, and Hudson Gates; brother and wife Charles and Brenda Vogel of Pittsburgh, PA; several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hudson Valley Philharmonic, C/O Bardavon Opera House, 35 Market St, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.

A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held at Woodland Pond on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at 2:00PM. Copeland Funeral Home, Inc., New Paltz, NY is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences and the obituary may be viewed at www.Copelandfhnp.com.
